The Word Became Flesh: A Christmas Reflection

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” - John 1:14 (ESV)

As I reflect on this verse, I am reminded that Christmas is not just a time to share food, hang out with family, and exchange expensive gifts. It is a time to reflect on the birth of Christ – the One who came so that all could live life more abundantly (John 10:10).

To me, this verse is a challenge to live a life that promotes joy, peace, health, and prosperity to everyone regardless of faith, background, gender, or ethnicity. In a time where mainstream Christianity seems to be most concerned with proximity to wealth and the misuse of power, I pray and hope that today will be a time where more of us reflect on the personhood of Christ and realign ourselves to the mission of bringing hope to this broken world. Because as the story goes, the Word became flesh and dwelled among us. The Word did not allow Himself to be weaponized or be complicit to systems of oppression. Instead, He humbled himself; He took on the form of a servant and gave his life so that all could experience the gift of spiritual, emotional, and physical liberation (Philippians 2:1-10).

As you reflect on this verse (and my other references), I ask you to consider how you play a role in bringing hope to those who are often rejected or forgotten. The Christmas season should be a time to thoroughly re-examine our faith and overall purpose.
